Sustainability

Being a self-reliant and self-sufficient enterprise is extremely important to the team at Creswick Open Range Farm.

Off Grid

Our farm is completely off grid. We rely on annual rainfall for our water supply, (collected in tanks off our roofs), and we generate our own electricity through our extensive solar panel system. Harnessing the power of the sun, our 7.5kw Trina panels work hard, providing all the electricity we need to power our entire farm including the packing shed, cool room, house, fence, the works!

Farming Practises

Our farming practises are regenerative, and we’re passionate about authentically walking the talk in this space. Our philosophy is that if we look after our hens and our fields, they’ll look after us. Our hen homes are moved twice a week, promoting even fertilisation of our paddocks, and fresh roosting positions for the girls.

Paddocks

Our roaming paddocks are huge, so there is no competition between our brood as to who gets the best pickings. They all do! We keep our paddocks well-maintained and managed. We put our excessive grass to good use by mowing it. Grass clippings, combined with the nitrogen from our hen’s manure, creates the most amazing topsoil.

Weed Control and Pesticides

We utilise annual burn offs for organic weed control. There is no need for imported fertilisers and our girls do a great job keeping the insects and bugs at bay, without the need for harsh pesticides.

Eggs

Every single egg that is found in one of our cartons is grown and packed right here on the farm. No need for share farmers, contractors, wholesalers or unnecessary food-miles. We keep our footprint small, and that’s the way we like it.

Hen Houses

All our hen homes are constructed on-site using plantation grown timber and recycled steel, often sourced from local scrap yards. Timber is a great resource – it swells in winter when it’s damp, keeping out the drafts. In summer, it dries and shrinks to keep our girls nice and cool.

Egg Cartons

Even our egg cartons are made from 100% locally sourced kerbside recycling collection material, made in Melbourne.

Taking Good Care of the Paddocks

We cut the grass in our paddocks annually to add to our regenerative topsoil program. Grass cutting and the nitrogen from our hens manure is a rich mix!
