Fequently Asked Questions
How big are your yards?
Our chook yards aren’t big – they’re HUGE!
In fact, our 3 paddocks range between 6 are 13 hectares, ensuring plenty of room to roam.
How many hens do you have per hectare?
There are less than 200 hens per hectare at any given time, and around 4000 hens on the entire 48-hectare farm.
How many hens are in each colony?
We insist on small colonies, with only 500 ladies per colony at any given time.
What’s the difference between ‘Open Range’ and ‘Free Range?’
Free range farms can have up to 10,000 hens per hectare, and the hens often spend long periods of time in large sheds until they lay.
Our open range farm is truly open range.
There are no small electric yards, and our henhouses don’t even have doors, so the girls are free to come and go as they please.
What other animals do you farm?
The simple answer is none! Our girls have exclusive use of the chook yard – there are no sheep or cattle to compete with.
How often do you feed the hens?
Feed and water are available to our girls, 24/7.
As our farm is completely off-grid, our girls have the luxury of pure rainwater straight from our tank, meaning there is no fluoride, chlorine, salt, sulphur or other nasties being consumed.
Do you produce most of your eggs?
100% of our eggs are grown on our farm, end of story.
Why aren’t your eggs labelled ‘organic’?
We try to keep the costs to our customers to a minimum. As organic feed costs so much more but yields far less, the cost of our eggs would rise to unaffordable levels.
Why are your eggs labelled ‘Soy Free’?
Allergens from a hen’s diet such as soy can come through in the eggs they lay. Our hens only consume the finest, premium feed that is both soy and corn free. You can read more about the science behind soy free diets for hens here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9658713/
